Worship at Capitol Drive Lutheran Church

Worship life at Capitol Drive Lutheran Church and in the Christian Church in general is centered around the worship of the one true Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We are a liturgical church which seeks to worship God in familiar and complete ways with the Sacrament of Holy Communion celebrated at each Sunday service.

Some of the important components of Christian and liturgical worship are: Invocation (remembering our Baptism), Confession and Absolution, Scriptures and Psalms, the Holy Gospel, singing of hymns, the sermon, prayers, receiving the true presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist, Benediction, giving back to God in the offering, and meditating while listening to the prelude and postlude. Liturgy in worship is the format in which everyone present actually worships. Worship is the core existence of the church.

Our worship is lead by many people, not by just the pastors. The Presiding Minister leads the congregation in the liturgy and Sacrament while the Preaching Minister delivers the sermon. An assisting lay minister leads us in prayer and other portions of the service. Members of the congregation serve as lectors while the Cantor or choir leads in our Psalm. Communion Servers assist with the Sacrament of Holy Communion, which is given in a “continuous line” format where the common cup, individual cup, and intinction are available.  If you would like to join in assisting in the liturgy, feel free to talk with the pastors or contact the church office.

Service of Holy Communion
Our Eucharistic Feast reflects the long history of high liturgical worship in the Lutheran Church as we use and adapt from the newly printed Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW). Our liturgy is sequenced with the GATHERING, WORD, MEAL, and SENDING. With The Word, Preaching, Sacrament, music and song, our worship is meaningful and moving to those gathered in Christ’s presence.  By offering different settings of the Liturgy and with different musical settings, worship does not become mundane or stagnant.

Traditional Worship
We use various settings from the ELW with our three manual Reuter organ three to four times a month.
Contemporary Worship
We are led in worship generally once a month by our Stream Team.  Our praise band is a contemporary music group with youth and adult singers accompanied by keyboard, guitar, and drums.  If you would like to join the Stream Team, talk with Kim Oien or Pastor Timm.
Assisted Listening
Please see the usher at the sound control station to pick up an assisted listening device. It will bring sounds of worship clearly to your ears.
Gluten Free Communion Wafers
Romans 14:20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble.

The word of God teaches us that it is right for someone to not eat anything that will cause health difficulties. Unfortunately for some, coming to church and partaking of the Holy Communion can be a problem due to Celiac Disease. Celiac disease is a genetic intolerance to the gluten in wheat, rye, and barley. Gluten is an additive in hundreds of foods which makes grocery shopping, cooking, and dining out problematic for many people.

When a person with Celiac disease consumes gluten, it triggers an autoimmune response that causes damage to the small intestine. This sets off various complications in which the small intestine is unable to absorb the nutrients found in food that then can lead to malnutrition and a host of other problems. In some people, the symptoms are mild while in others, cases can be severe. There are no cures for Celiac disease and you cannot “catch” it from your neighbor as this is an inherited gene. There are no medications available and the only treatment is lifelong abstinence from gluten.

Capitol Drive Lutheran Church welcomes all to our communion table with Celiac Sprue as we now have gluten free communion wafers available. Simply request them when the bread is being served.
